This is a series of photos that my father took almost 40 years ago. I developed them sometime around the age of 20 and assembled them as it was intended. Then the topic didn’t let go of me and I started to build a sculpture out of it in 2012 ..in 3D of course. I would like to have it built as a real sculpture in New York. To do this I had to recreate the WTC to scale and then distort the model in perspective and spherical. For this I had to program a deformer for my 3D software which does exactly that.
The idea was, everyone who looks at the sculpture automatically takes the role of the photographer who stood between the two towers and looks up. Because of the distortion and a good viewing distance (the height was planned to be 10 meters) one has a similar monumental impression of the architecture as in those days “in real”.
This project is still slumbering a bit. I have different approaches and I’m just not sure how to approach it. I have to invest a lot of time and nerves and want to make sure that it was not in vain.
The pictures show here: The contact sheet of the originals, the first montage from about ’95, a concept drawing for the exhibition of the picture, the 3D print of the sculpture 2014 in scale 1:20.
